International Student Registration Guide: Health Insurance

International student health insurance is mandatory for every F-1 and J-1 Students are automatically billed for the International Student Medical Insurance Plan by The Lewer Agency, Inc. on their student account and pay for it with their tuition and other fees. This provides you with insurance coverage during your time at Truman. All students, except for ISEP and SACM students, will have insurance through the Lewer Agency, Inc. while at Truman. This amount is calculated into the fee estimate that we use on your I-20/DS-2019. The current insurance rate is about $600 per semester, however this amount is subject to change.

The reason that Truman requires all international students to have special insurance is that healthcare is VERY expensive in the United States. The U.S. does not have a national insurance provided by the government. Each individual is responsible for their own insurance and medical expenses. Truman State University requires health insurance coverage for all international students—any student attending Truman State University who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. There are NO WAIVERS OR EXCEPTIONS for any student who is not sponsored by ISEP or SACM!

Students who are still on their parents insurance from their home country (even if it is an international policy), or students who choose purchase international insurance will still be enrolled in Lewer student health insurance and the fees will be charged to their student account. For this reason, we STRONGLY discourage students  from purchasing international insurance, as it will mean paying for insurance twice (ISEP students are the only exception, as their program requires the purchase of international insurance).

The insurance that Truman has chosen for international students includes the following benefits*:

  • No Maximum
  • Copay of $15 at an in-network office or clinic
  • Copay of $50 at an in-network hospital
  • Reimbursement for 50% of prescription medicines
  • Medical evacuation $50,000
  • Repatriation $25,000

*ISEP students will have a different insurance company with different insurance coverage, not administered by Truman. ISEP students should carefully read their insurance policies to better understand their benefits.

Insurance Exclusions:
Even with insurance, some expenses are excluded and will be the responsibility of the student. The excluded services will be described in the insurance brochure provided upon arrival. This insurance plan does not cover dental or vision care. Students who wish to have additional dental or vision coverage must purchase this additional coverage themselves.

Cost:
The fee for health insurance coverage is approximately $600 each semester, and is subject to change. This fee is charged on your student account and must be paid with your tuition and other fees.

Waiver:
Waiver of the university-recommended health insurance is allowed only if specified in a contract with your sponsor or sponsoring agency. At this time, only students sponsored by the Saudi Arabian Cultured Mission and by the International Student Exchange Program are approved for waiver.
