Students who receive conditional admission from Truman will attend an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program on Truman’s Campus before starting full-time coursework at the University. This program is designed to help students improve their skills in English communication and comprehension.

  1. What is The Language Company?

  2. What is the English as a Second Language program?
The ESL program that is offered to incoming students will focus on improving the reading, writing, and speaking skills of all participants. All ESL coursework is located on Truman’s campus, so you will be able to be an active member in the University’s community. It is divided into nine levels of instruction which accommodate a wide range of English capability. The duration of the program varies depending on starting English proficiency and the rate of the student’s progression. There are 13 ESL sessions per year, which allows students to begin at any time that is convenient for them.
  3. What is conditional admission?
Conditional admission at Truman is offered to students who lack the English proficiency requirement. It is meant for students who have not taken an English proficiency exam such as the TOEFL or IELTS, but would still like to apply. If students apply for and receive conditional admission from Truman, they will then be required to complete the ESL program before enrolling in the University.

However, we still require transcripts, bank documents, and a certificate of financial support before your file is completed. Please see our admission requirements for more information. Truman offers many dormitory style living arrangements, most of which include a meal plan for the on-campus dining halls. Many students find this convenient because they do not need to pay for utilities or food, and get a chance to become immersed in the Truman student community. Another option is to live with a host family near Truman’s campus. Although space is very limited, this will give you an opportunity to experience an American household from a personal perspective. Finally, depending on eligibility, you may be able to live off-campus in one of the many apartments or rental houses offered in Kirksville. Please keep in mind that some students are required to live on campus once they start full time Truman enrollment. Truman is not responsible for off-campus living arrangements, so students will be responsible for things such as rent, utilities, and food.
