Are you eligible?
Truman State University offers eight STEM OPT-approved majors:
If you have graduated with a degree in one of these fields and you are currently on post-completion OPT, the STEM extension is an option for you. You can find a complete list of STEM OPT-approved majors here. If you have previously graduated from a different university with one of these degrees, you are also eligible for the STEM extension.
The STEM Extension is only available to students who have a job offer from an e-verify company. Talk with your employer to see if they are an e-verify company. You can also visit the official e-verify website to look for e-verify companies.
The STEM OPT Extension Application Process
- Attend a STEM OPT workshop hosted by the Center for International Students. During the workshop, you will learn more about the application process and about reporting requirements during the STEM extension. Send an email to iso01@truman.edu to schedule a workshop.
- Prepare your application materials, upload all documents to a Google Drive folder, and share the folder with iso01@truman.edu.
- Once the CIS has checked your application, the DSO will issue you a new I-20 with a recommendation for STEM OPT. The CIS will notify you to pick it up. You should sign it immediately and make a copy of it.
- Submit your application within 30 days of receiving your new I-20. The signature from the DSO is only valid for 30 days. You should use the copy of your I-20 to apply, not the original I-20.
